How to Specify Zippers for Handbags: A Buyer’s Guide

Updated: 4 days ago
A handbag zipper specification needs more than a tooth colour and length. Define the chain construction, opening arrangement, slider, puller and tape, then assess the complete assembly in your bag sample. This guide explains the main choices and the information to include in a development brief.

Coil, moulded plastic and metal zippers
Coil zippers use continuous spiral elements. “Nylon zipper” is often used as a general description, but the element polymer should be confirmed: YKK’s standard coil description includes both polyester and nylon. The selected grade still needs to suit the application.
Moulded plastic zippers use individual plastic elements. Metal zippers use metal elements and offer different visible finishes. Compare the proposed articles for size, appearance, weight and operation in the intended bag; the material family alone does not establish quality or suitability.
Decide how the bag should open
Closed-end: the two sides remain joined at one end. Specify where that end sits in the bag and how much usable access the customer needs.
Open-end: the two sides can separate. Use a clear drawing to show whether complete separation is required by your design.
Two sliders: draw their starting positions, travel directions and intended meeting point. “Double zipper” is not a complete instruction, because it can be interpreted in different ways.
Specify the slider and puller separately
The slider joins and separates the chain; the puller is the part the user holds. State the required locking behaviour and confirm the slider’s compatibility with the exact chain. A locking slider is not the same thing as a security lock for the bag.
For a custom puller, provide the shape, dimensions, logo artwork and desired finish. Review how it feels in the hand, whether it clears the zipper opening and how it sits against adjacent hardware. Confirm tooling, finish matching and availability during development.
Record length, size and colour clearly
Record the supplier article and size designation rather than assuming that an identical number makes components interchangeable. Show the zipper length and tape extensions on the drawing. Agree the supplier’s measuring convention so the ordered zipper fits the pattern.
Approve the tape, elements, slider and puller as a set. A single “gold” or “black” instruction may leave different interpretations of colour, gloss and finish. Keep a physical reference with the approved sample and specify the lighting used for colour comparison.
Check the zipper after it is sewn into the bag
Assess opening and closing through the full travel, clearance from lining and seams, end reinforcement and operation around the proposed curves. For a curved opening, supply the pattern or radius information and confirm the selected product’s suitability. YKK offers a dedicated curved-zipper product that requires shape information; this should not be interpreted as approval to bend any zipper into any curve.
If water resistance is a requirement, specify the intended exposure and a test plan for the complete bag, including seams and closures. A water-repellent zipper does not automatically make a waterproof bag.
YKK’s zipper instruction manual provides background on components, measurement, colour matching and sewing precautions. Apply the instructions for the actual selected product; the reference does not establish a supply partnership or test result for Autron.
What to send Autron for zipper development
Include the bag drawing, opening location, zipper construction and reference, length, tape colour, metal finish, number of sliders, puller design and quantity by colour. Note any nominated supplier or material requirement so it can be reviewed before sampling.
Browse our zipper and puller swatches, review the sampling process and use the handbag RFQ checklist to prepare your brief. Contact Autron to discuss the selected specification.
