Water-Based PU for Handbags: Production and Sourcing Checks

Water-based PU is one of the material options Autron can discuss for handbag development. When comparing it with conventional PU, review the coating formulation, backing fabric and finished material specification separately. A recycled backing does not, by itself, establish the recycled content of the coating or the environmental impact of the complete material.

Ask the material supplier for the selected article's composition, technical data sheet and relevant supporting documents. Confirm which layer contains recycled content and the percentage being claimed. Any comparison of water or energy use needs a defined process, measurement basis and supporting data for the materials being compared.

For handbag development, also review thickness, softness, grain, backing and the way the material behaves in the intended construction. Agree the required colourfastness, abrasion, flexing or other tests for the project before making performance claims.

Water-based does not mean chemical-free, and the term alone does not establish that a finished material is free of particular restricted substances. Coating formulations vary. Check the formulation and relevant test reports for the specific material instead of treating all water-based PU as identical.
